Technology at the service of the developement of the sugarcane industry
Siemens Energy has helped the sugar company Sucrivoire, part of Sifca Group, to develop its activities by erecting and commissioning a 7,5 MW cogeneration steam turbine on the Zuenoula site. The electricity is produced from waste sugar biomass which optimizes the efficiency of the power plant. Siemens Energy shows its support to Sucrivoire, who owns 11,000 hectares of industrial sugarcane plantations and two industrial sugarcane production units in Ivory Coast, for the development of the sugarcane industry as a way to improving life quality of local people.
Insight from the site
Working in a multidisciplinary team with people of different nationalities has been a very rewarding and exciting experience for me. As no project ever goes smoothly, especially in this current Covid-19 pandemic, we have learned to adapt to the needs of the moment to always satisfy our customers.Brice Assoumou, Project Manager at Siemens Energy
Challenge
- Valorize the potential of sugarcane in Cote d’Ivoire by developing the sugar industry in a socially and environmentally sustainable way.
Solution
- A Siemens Energy cogeneration SST-300 steam turbine of 7,5 MW was implemented on the site. The electricity and steam used in the sugar manufacturing is made from bagasse, a waste from sugar production.
Benefits
- We create a recycling circle by reusing sugarcane waste to produce electricity.
- We help Sucrivoire to improve its competitivity and develop its activities. The new steam turbine enables Zuenoula site to double its production.
- We optimize the overall efficiency of the production: the steam recovered by extraction from the turbine facilitates the sugar liquefaction process.
- The surplus of electricity produced is offered free of charge by Sucrivoire to the inhabitants of Zuenoula
- Siemens Energy promotes local capacity building by training Sucrivoire's technicians so that they can monitor the daily operation and maintenance of the turbine by themselves.
